The criminal record conundrum

Posted on: 18/06/2019

There probably is not a single Polish detective that has not been asked (again and again and again) about obtaining criminal records on a new hire or suspected errant employee. It’s an expected question. It makes us nervous, and it creates frustration (and legitimate worry) on all sides. Which means it’s about time someone in this country actually broke down the issue and told you the truth. Obtaining criminal records without a subject’s permission in Poland is illegal. There. I said it. And it’s illegal just about everywhere else in Europe. Yes, I said that too. Now let’s get to how many detectives have accomplished this very task, wh...

The boxing detective Part III

Posted on: 18/06/2019

Alas, let there be transparency. Yours Truly must indeed post that he lost his boxing match on points to a better (and younger and taller) foe. Despite an extreme effort and a few crisp punches, it proved impossible to get over a mistake in the second round that led to a knockdown (call it a “knockdown lite”). And for transparency’s sake, below is the fight, courtesy of a friend who had it filmed. Enjoy and back to our regularly scheduled programming of grease, grime, crime and vice.   https://www.facebook.com/1370404604/videos/10218599596765701/

Polish political polls and scandals--and what's in store

Posted on: 18/06/2019

In light of a wave of scandals, highly negative press on an EU level and ongoing teacher’s strikes on a national level, the Polish man on the street (or just the man on the street in Poland) just might think that the Law-and-Justice (PiS) are numbered. For indeed the scandals have been many since just before the beginning of the year. Tape scandals, financial regulator scandals, “can you believe the senator said that” scandals and more. Perhaps nothing yet ranks on the scale, number and financial damages caused by the plethora of scandals under the previous Civic Platform (PO) government, but this is hardly the momentum that any party wou...

The boxing detective Part II--two days to go

Posted on: 18/06/2019

Two days before the fight, Yours Truly, as in your favorite detective and also rather ironic publisher of the CEE Cheat Sheet and Crime Report, is feeling quite good in his 52-year-old, oft-plagued-by injuries body. But obviously, we’ll see what happens Saturday night. For those not in the know, Yours Truly will fight in the VI Biznes Boxing Executive Fight Night Gala to be held April 13 at 19:30, with the first fight of the night happening to be against an up-and-comer some 30 years younger. Call it vanity? Suicide? A mid-life crisis? Not even I know. That said, there is still time to donate to the cause—which happens to be to Fundacja ...

The boxing detective

The April 13 Biznes Boxing Gala to be held at Legia Fight Club is coming up. I'm by far the oldest fighter (let's say contestant), and probably the one most ridden with tendinitis, sprains, etc., but... it's for a good cause. The tables, I believe, are sold out, but single tickets can be had--PM me if you are interested. I will also put the link below that enables donations to the Badz Foundation to fight cancer. Hope to see you there (first goal is making it through the next weeks without injury).
